Getting started
What exactly is a Homigo host?
A verified local who helps you arrive, understand, navigate and belong. Not just a bed, a ride or a tour, but a real person who knows the place, the people and the language. Depending on your service they guide you remotely, walk beside you, ride with you, or look after your whole group.
Where is Homigo available?
We are live in Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja and Mbale. Mbarara, Fort Portal, Kabale, Kisoro and Bushenyi are coming next, then Kigali and Nairobi. Join the waitlist on the Cities page to hear first.
How does matching work?
Tell us where you are going, when, your budget, languages and what worries you. We propose three verified hosts who fit you, not just your location, and you choose.
I’m Ugandan. Is Homigo for me too?
Absolutely. Moving from Kampala to Mbale can feel as foreign as flying in from abroad. Same country, new language: a host from your new district helps you settle in.
Payments & escrow
Who do I pay?
You pay Homigo, by Mobile Money (MTN, Airtel) or card. We hold the money in escrow and release it to your host only when you confirm they delivered.
What if my host doesn’t show up?
Your money never left escrow, so you get it back. We also try to find a replacement host the same day.
What about extra costs on the day?
Entry fees, meals or fuel are requested in the app by your host. Nothing is paid until you approve it.
Can I pay in cash?
Yes, for your host’s service fee. Choose “Cash to your host” when you book or extend, then pay your host when you meet. Cash goes straight to your host, so it isn’t held in escrow and Homigo can’t refund it; mobile money, card and your trip wallet stay protected. Trip wallet top-ups are mobile money or card only, and a host who asks for cash you didn’t choose in the app should be reported.
Safety & privacy
How are hosts vetted?
National ID checked against the register, a selfie liveness check, two references and an interview. A police clearance is optional for hosts; those who have one show a Police cleared badge with its expiry date and are shown higher in matches. About 1 in 4 applicants passes, and every host keeps being audited after they go live.
Can my host see my phone number?
No. Chat and calls run inside Homigo and the Privacy Shield strips phone numbers, emails and social handles automatically.
What does the emergency button do?
Hold it for two seconds and your live location and profile go to the Homigo support desk, which coordinates with police, security agencies and vetted transport. If you are in immediate danger, also call 999 or 112.
What happens when my booking ends?
The chat locks automatically. You can buy an extension in the app if you’d like more time with your host.
Becoming a host
What does it take to become a host?
A national ID, two references, a smartphone and a love for your city. A police clearance is optional but earns you a Police cleared badge and a higher place in matches. Review takes 3–7 days.
How do hosts get paid?
Guests pay into escrow and the money is released to your Homigo wallet when they confirm. Withdraw to Mobile Money or your bank.
What is the host deposit?
Hosts keep a small refundable deposit in their Homigo wallet. The platform commission is deducted from it when a booking locks in, so guests never pay hidden fees.
What are check-ins?
Each day you send your guest a morning plan and an evening update, written or as a short voice note. They keep guests reassured and keep your compliance score healthy.
